The King in Yellow Page
foundThe King in Yellow Page
A typed page found on the studio rooftop, November 15, 2015. Text from Robert W. Chambers, "The Repairer of Reputations" (from the collection The King in Yellow, 1895).
Text on the page:
"Have you never read it?" I asked.
"I? No, thank God! I don't want to be driven crazy."
I saw he regretted his speech as soon as he had uttered it. There is only one word which I loathe more than I do lunatic and that word is crazy. But I controlled myself and asked him why he thought "The King in Yellow" dangerous.
— Robert W. Chambers, "The Repairer of Reputations"
Context: Found on the roof alongside a chair, a book, and a telescope. Sterling Horselover had been on the roof alone that evening. His shoes were missing when found inside.
Mythos Note
*The King in Yellow* is a fictional play within the Chambers mythos — reading it induces madness. Horselover's escalating fixation on "doing something big," his erratic behavior, and his rooftop stargazing are consistent with early exposure. The book itself was seen on the roof briefly before disappearing.
